It started with the Juniors.
I felt a ton of eyes staring me down as everyone walked by to their next class. Eric told them I was a student starting tomorrow, and suddenly I was crowded. People squeezed in left and right, all trying to see if the story was true. "Whoa"'s and "Oh my gosh"'es echoed from the walls as the entire student body went dead quiet.
I shifted my weight uneasily, looking up from the floor and giving a small smile to the crowd. Most of them smiled back gently, others couldn't stop staring.
Eric cleared his throat, "This is Grace. You'll have plenty of time to talk to her tomorrow, unless you'd rather scare her away."
I laughed silently as everyone rushed off to class, "How'd you do that?"
"Are you kidding? This is Forks, and they'll bomb you with questions tomorrow. No one would want to scare a new student off."
I giggled. That seemed really silly, considering how I was a complete nobody before. I had a feeling it wouldn't last long.
Good. I'd rather everyone get it over with as soon as possible. I was kinda sick of attention and special treatment.
The late bell rang, and the halls were empty now.
"You wanna go home now? You look tired..." Eric was watching my hands; I never saw them shake like that.....
I smiled, "Yeah. I'll see you tomorrow?"
"Yeah. I'll meet you in the parking lot."
"Okay, bye."
"Bye."
I got my bag from him and starting moving to my car. It wasn't raining. Not yet, at least. When I got to my car, I dropped my stupid keys.
"Dang it, not again," I mumbled, grabbing a magnet stick from a slot in my left crutch and pulled it out to it's full length. I quickly pointed it down and stuck it to my keys, then pulled it back up and stuck it back in it's place. I opened the car door and, carefully holding on to the handles, pulled myself into the seat.
Then I dropped the keys again.
"Crap!" I said a little louder than necessary. I was screwed, because I'd already put my crutches ---with the magnet in it--- in the back seat!
Gripping at a handle tightly with one hand, I slowly lowered my arm down towards the ground. My fingers were just inches from the keys when my hand slipped. I gasped and grabbed the car handle with my other hand.
I'd have to worry about the keys later. Now I had to find a way to not crack my head on the ground.
"Oh my God!" I heard someone say.
Then a boy came over to me and grabbed me by my arms and waist, gently pulling me back into the seat. My keys were dropped into my lap.
When I finally looked up, the first thing my eyes met were a pair of golden eyes.
Every 17-year old girl has the same general dream: To have a happy life with a boy who loves her.
But what if that dream was nearly impossible to reach?
When Grace looks at it, for her, it is.
How could someone love you, give you a chance at anything, if you were... broken?
Will that same theory apply to the small town of Forks, Washington?
Would it let her love life? To meet someone who loves her for her?
Was her Polio a curse, or a blessing?
There's only one way to find out.
